Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo. While most of you were out celebrating I was at home putting the laundry away, getting my sons bathed, clothed and fed, cooking and preparing tomorrow’s lunches and outfits, as I ate my own dinner.
By 9pm I am done with everything. I sit down to do some editing/revisions and turn on the TV because now it’s gotten a little too quiet. So can you guess what first popped onto the screen? Let me tell you. It was Tank Girl.
Now to all Tank Girl movie fans out there, I’d first like to say I’m sorry. But Tank Girl is one crazy mess of a movie. I don’t know how it became a film in the first place. I mean, what were they thinking when they made and released this?
I admit that I'd always watch the film for a few moments. Don’t ask me why, but I think it’s because I’m trying to get my head around it somehow. Eventually I give up and change the channel. But then it got me
thinking about books being adapted to the big screen. If you don’t already know, Tank Girl is loosely based on a British comic book and was released in theatres in 1995.
It’s been 19 years since then, and not discounting the films before it, but there’s been a slew of films based on books, comics, etc. There’s been X-men, Fantastic Four, Harry Potter (loved it and the books), Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, Oilver Twist, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Angels and Demons, The DaVinci Code and most recently The Hunger Games, Thor and The Avengers, just to name a few. And then there’s Divergent which is set to release in theaters in July 2014.
To me it looks a lot like that Hollywood has drastically decreased making movies based on original scripts. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But in your opinion, what books do you believe should’ve just been left alone? (Ahem, Tank Girl)
Or, what books do you believe would make a great movie? Why?
Off the top of my head, I wholeheartedly believe that the Harry Potter movies are the best book adaptations to film of all time.
